Aromatherapy is not the soup du jour of beauty routines. The practice traces its roots back thousands of years to ancient civilizations. We are all familiar with countless tales of Cleopatra’s extensive beauty routines!
Aromatherapy History
In fact, archeologists have discovered evidence that the Egyptian perfumers were considerably accomplished at the practice of extracting essential oils from flowers and plants – what we now refer to as aromatherapy! Cleopatra, or perhaps her staff, had a great understanding of how these oils could be used to enhance her beauty. Aromatherapy is the practice of using the natural oils (known as essential oils) extracted from flowers, bark, stems, leaves, roots or other parts of the plant to enhance both physical and mental well being!
Difference Between Aromatherapy & Essential Oils
Unfortunately many people use the terms aromatherapy and essential oils interchangeably. Think of essential oils as the delivery method for aromatherapy. One either breathes the essential oils through the nose to capture the benefit, or applies the essential oil to the skin (never directly) for absorption.
Why We Use Essential Oils in Our Soap
Soap is the perfect vehicle to allow for both breathing in the aroma and absorbing the essential oil through the skin! In addition, soap provides an easy and routine way to adopt an aromatherapy practice, as bathing is typically a daily occurrence!
