To make our very own pet shampoo soap bar, we use citronella essential oil - which is an all natural flea and tick repellent. The citronella plant is native to Southeast Asia. Citronella looks and smells a lot like lemongrass but its appearance is slightly different. It is also usually not as tall as lemongrass.
Using Citronella Oil in Pet Soap
The essential oil of citronella is usually extracted by means of steam distillation since that is the optimal method for harnessing the various nutrients and chemicals which make it so medically and therapeutically beneficial. Citronella oil can be found in a variety of beauty/cosmetics products, due to its anti-fungal and antibacterial qualities, as well as the large amount of antioxidants it contains.
How Its Used
Many times, it is an oil which is used to keep pests and insects from coming too close to our homes and bodies. This is precisely where it can be extremely beneficial for your dog. There are many insecticides out there, but too often they have harsh chemicals and potentially-toxic substances in them.
On the other hand, Citronella is all natural essential oil, and when used properly there are no known side effects adding it within soap making. Furthermore, it uses water as a carrier, unlike many insecticides which use alcohol.
How Citronella Soap Protects Your Pet
Citronella oil is especially popular with dog owners. Fleas are a nuisance, but in some cases, they can cause your pet to develop a more serious reaction, known as flea allergy dermatitis (FAD). Not all pets develop this condition, but some do. Citronella – used in a pet shampoo, can help to prevent fleas from attaching themselves to your pets.
